Laboratório Nociferatu (1999-2012) is structured according to an important principle in the work of Tunga: the double. In the installation, glass and mirror reflect and, by doing so, duplicate bells, drinking glasses, and other objects made of glass disposed on the surface. As one walks around the work, the variation of light incidence and the angle of the mirror create a new perspective with the reflections on the objects.
The notion of the laboratory as a space to investigate the matter and, in this case, optics as well, is a recurring theme in Tunga’s work. Here it is possible to observe the effect caused by the use of mirrors, recalling a camera obscura (optical device created in the 19th century) while projecting the mirrored image in a matte paper, as some sort of ghostly image. The reference of the title alludes to the protagonist of the film Nosferatu (1922), a fictional character that has set the grounds to create the vampiric imaginary in the 20th century.
