Robert Irwin
Long Beach, United States of America, 1928 – San Diego, United States of America, 2023
Robert Irwin started his career as an abstract painter, showing his work for the first time at the Felix Landau Gallery, in Los Angeles (1957). By this time, he started to question the boundaries of the traditional art field. Since the 1960s, Irwin explores the relation of perception in art by means of immersive environments in installations and interventions intended to alter the physical, sensory, and temporal experience. As part of the Light and Space movement, the artist often uses natural light, fluorescent lamps, color gel, or veils in order to transform the spaces.
Since 1975, he has also made public intervention projects, like the Getty Center gardens (USA). Among his main exhibitions is the first retrospective of his career, held in 1993 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, which later traveled to Europe. (Germany, France, and Spain).
