Working with painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, the artist started her education in visual arts back in 1983, at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (Rio de Janeiro). The first works of Adriana Varejão already pointed towards issues and references that remain present in her production yet today, like her interest in the history of Portuguese colonization in Brazil and the violence of this process.
Since her first solo exhibition, held in 1988 at Galeria Thomas Cohn, she presented her work in several national and international institutions, including the São Paulo Bienal and the MoMA in New York. In 2008, Galeria Adriana Varejão was inaugurated at Instituto Inhotim.
