Fourth Act – Quilombismo: Documents of a Pan-Africanist Militancy
Starting November 11, Inhotim, in a joint curation with the Institute of Research and Afro-Brazilian Studies (Ipeafro), presents Abdias Nascimento’s exhibition Quarto Ato – O Quilombismo: Documentos de uma Militância Pan-Africanista [Fourth Act – Quilombismo: Documents of a Pan-Africanist Militancy].
The exhibition, which addresses the work and trajectory of Abdias Nascimento, brings, in its final cycle, an overview of the artist’s life revolving around Xangô, the Orisha of justice and a constant presence in Abdias’ discourse and work.
Divided in eight sections, the Fourth Act covers the multiple sides of Abdias Nascimento as a poet, playwright, actor, writer, artist and politician from the perspective of resistance and creativity of quilombismo, a concept that permeated his practices throughout his life.
In addition to works by Abdias produced in different phases of his artistic career, the exhibition also features works by LeRoy Caldwell Johnson, Heitor dos Prazeres, Tunga, Yêdamaria, Sebastião Januário, Iberê Camargo, Diego Rivera, Emanoel Araújo, Regina Vater, Anna Bella Geiger, Fayga Ostrower, Flávio de Carvalho, José Heitor, Agnaldo Manuel dos Santos, Babatunde Folayemi, Melvin Edwards, Dayse Gomis and Marcel Diogo.
The exhibition has Master Sponsorship from Itaú and Silver Sponsorship from Petrobras through the Federal Law for Culture Incentive. The project was selected in the 2022 Open Call Petrobras Cultural Múltiplas Expressões.
