While living in New York in the early 1970s, Hélio Oiticica collaborated with filmmaker Neville D’Almeida to create groundbreaking installations that he termed “quasi-cinemas.” Those pieces transformed slide projections into spatial installations, to immerse viewers in multi-sensory experiences. The quasicinemas are a culmination of Oiticica’s career-long effort to draw the spectator into the center of his art, and to create something that is as much an event or process as it is an object or product, a challenge to the traditionally passive relationship between the artwork and the audience. Oiticica and D’Almeida developed five quasi-cinemas entitled Block-Experiments in Cosmococa.
